Sailing Association qualifications can help charter a boatI recently read an article in Bluewater Sailing
written by the editor concerning the delights of short holiday cruising and
how one can charter a boat power or sail with relative ease these days. How
easy? well very if you can present the qualifications from a reputable
sailing association. Requirements could be anywhere from a Safe-Boating
Certificate to full qualifications for say Canadian Yachting Association
Cruising Program. Sailing associations provide theoretical and practical
courses for anyone (no experience necessary). You don't have to be an owner
to think about cruising as Captain if you have the qualifications to meet
chartering companies standards. How to get these qualifications? Well the
very best and really the only way is join and take courses from a Sailing
Association. Most give training in sail and power. You can find them on the
internet. Our school, The International Navigation
School is Canadian Yachting Association approved to provide Coastal and
Celestial instruction leading to CYA qualification. These courses are carried
out by correspondence and are divided into units with questions to answer and
send in at the end of each. We use email, fax, and individual web meetings
tailored to student requirements. Of course, phone calls and ordinary mail
correspondence are always welcome. Why take our courses? It isn't always
convenient to find an Association course just when you want it. You may be
away from home a lot due to work requirements or you may just want to do the
course at your own pace, faster or slower than say a course obtainable
through an association. You will of course have to attend Sailing Association
practical courses to become fully certified. Enquire about this to the
association. Oh! very important don't forget to get a copy
of "Regulations for the prevention of Collisions at Sea" (Rules of
the Road) They can be self studied. Available on the net from US Coast Guard,
Canadian Marine Safety and overseas like administrations. "Keep a good lookout"
